Solutions for Illumination

Lighting provides the manner in which we see the world.  It is the reason objects at night look at times more imposing or looming than they do during the day.  When considering solutions for lighting, you should think about chandeliers, lamps, sconces, and traditional ceiling fixtures.  In addition, unique lighting solutions such as sculptures, plants, and light diffusers will become the focal point of a space.

Whenever you’re arranging furniture, art, or entertainment devices you should think about the lighting in the room first.  Where does the light come from?  How will this look in natural light versus artificial light?  Will I be able to see the television with the glare from this lamp?  These are just a few of the questions to ask yourself when figuring out your lighting solution.

If sitting under a fluorescent light all day isn’t exactly appealing to you, look into the benefits of light diffusers. A light diffuser is a cover that’s used to shield and soften the light coming from a fluorescent bulb. It scatters the harsh light in order to produce softer light.

The use of light diffusers is recommended not only in the office, but at home, too. Studies have shown that fluorescent lights can have myriad effects on people, including headaches, eyestrain, afternoon tiredness, increased stress levels, and difficulty concentrating. Using a diffuser to decrease the likelihood of these affects will not only make the office a more pleasant environment, it will make the home a happier place.

Unique Lighting

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a depressive disorder that strikes people with otherwise normal mental health in the winter each year.  (There is also a summer version which is much rarer, known as Reverse Seasonal Affective Disorder.)  A serious mood change is accompanied by sleeping too much, experiencing fatigue, and craving sweets and starches in addition to feelings of depression. In extreme cases, SAD sufferers have chosen to relocate to climates with more light in an attempt to reduce these symptoms.  In the past few years, light boxes and other specifically designed lights are commonly prescribed to counteract the affects of SAD.
