Amongst light bulbs, there are essentially two different types: incandescent and fluorescent. Incandescent lighting is based on the original technology mastered by inventor Thomas Edison, and was the lighting of choice for more than a hundred years. More recently, fluorescent lighting has become available. The difference between the fluorescent bulb and the incandescent bulb is that produces less heat and lasts about five times as long. However the fluorescent bulb is not without some drawbacks, for one, compared to the incandescent bulb, the fluorescent bulb has a significant delay in turning on. In addition, fluorescent bulbs contain mercury, a highly toxic and dangerous substance, thus bulbs must be handled with care.
You will tend to find incandescent bulbs in household lighting or lamps, fluorescents are more common in office lighting and businesses due to their longevity.
