Making the office a comfortable environment for employees can increase productivity and ensure they’ll stay at their desks longer, and work more. One idea to consider is to bring in plants or small trees. This not only makes the office more aesthetically pleasing, but increases the production of oxygen, allowing for more oxygen to reach the brain, and increasing mental productivity. Another idea is to replace your existing lighting panels with sky-scapes, which have colored prints of the sky, ocean, or popular characters like Dilbert. While having no scientific benefit, these add an artistic appeal to the office.
In addition, simple changes like free coffee a couple days of the week or doughnuts from the bakery on Mondays never hurt.
Amongst light bulbs, there are essentially two different types: incandescent and fluorescent. Incandescent lighting is based on the original technology mastered by inventor Thomas Edison, and was the lighting of choice for more than a hundred years. More recently, fluorescent lighting has become available. The difference between the fluorescent bulb and the incandescent bulb is that produces less heat and lasts about five times as long. However the fluorescent bulb is not without some drawbacks, for one, compared to the incandescent bulb, the fluorescent bulb has a significant delay in turning on. In addition, fluorescent bulbs contain mercury, a highly toxic and dangerous substance, thus bulbs must be handled with care.

Imagine sitting in a dark office. The lights are dull, and buzzing. There’s one window, in your boss’s office. You can’t even tell if it’s night or day outside. Your eyes are tired and you’re falling asleep at your desk.
